Stuck in Read-Only Mode

After downloading & registering Aeon 3, I opened my Aeon 2 timeline in the updated program. After clicking around for a while with the tutorials, I was ready to start adding and changing items. I saved-as the timeline with a new name, and I then I noticed that there’s orange lettering in the top right corner of the window that says ‘READ-ONLY.’

How and why did this happen? How can I turn it off? I’m not seeing any settings in the program, or anything in the manual, or online about it.

I still don’t know how or why it happened, but I quit the program, then reopened it with the timeline and the ‘Read-Only’ thing was gone.

If anyone knows how it happened in the first place, please let me know so I can avoid it in the future.

Hi Mary,
When you view the “My Account” window, is it showing you as logged into your account?

In general, the app should be in editor mode if you login to an account or are in an active trial, or if you open a file created with a newer version (not really possible yet)

It should normally only go into read-only mode if you click on “Switch to read only mode” from the My Account screen (you would have to logout to even see that button).

Yes, I check that several times and it seemed always to show I was registered and logged it.

Just saw this update.

I am not completely sure why this would have happened either.

Are you on Mac or Windows?

I will keep an eye out for other similar reports, and please keep me informed if it comes back again.

I will double check the entry paths that can take you into read-only mode.

There are a couple that are a file-based decision based on file version numbers and things, but none I would expect to be relevant at this point.

There may be other cases I am forgetting which i will get one of our team to check.

This happened to me just last night.

  1. I created a new timeline and had added about 30 people items, only doing that.
  2. At one point the app stopped responding for about 10 seconds.
  3. When it came to, it had buffered my create clicks so I ended up with 5 or 6 untitled person entries.
  4. I selected them with command-click and then pressed the delete key.
  5. I think I might have accidentally pressed another key but I suddenly found myself in read only mode.
  6. My account window showed I was logged in.

I quit and launched AT3 and everything seemed normal again.

Thanks for that detail. We will dig through it carefully and work out how this can be happening.

Kelly, are you also on Mac, or are you on Windows?

Sorry. Forgot to mention. It’s a Mac laptop running Catalina.
