I am new here. I am trialling AE3 (past user of AE2) with the express purpose of syncing with my Scrivener 3.5.2. and finishing my novel. I have many questions so I will start with this one. A little background may help. Been writing my novel since Feb 2025. I had a stroke (recovering well) that made me lay down the novel work for many, many months. So just picking it up again.
My question relates to subplots.
in AE3 I have created a sample novel file with a little detail. I have created a subplots item which shows in the left items panel.
AE3 and I are confused about how to build out subplots, the story arc and character arcs in the application.
So we are on the same page with terminology;
Story arcs are the spine of the narrative.
I use subplots to either deepen the characters, explore themes or create complications for protagonists or antagonists.
I use character arcs to show the internal journey of a character, allowing the readers to understand why character’s choices impact their world and those around them.
So my plot events and my subplots hopefully empower my character’s growth or hinder their growth and awareness which in turn drive plot progression.

So if someone can help me clarify how to set these up in AE3 I would appreciate the advice. If their is a video that explains this, or a document then point me in that direction.
