Viewing Children of Story Arcs in the Subway View

Hello,

I have nested story arcs under each person.

When I go to the subway view and choose the parent story arc, it only shows me events tagged with that highest level, but not the children underneath.

Is there no way to see it all together w/o having to turn on each story arc individually?

There’s no view children option like in filters in the content settings.

Any ideas or not possible?

Hi romebot2,

There currently isn’t an option in Subway View to automatically include the children of a selected Story Arc, so what you’re seeing is expected behaviour.

It’s something we plan to add in the future, but for now you would need to add a relationship to the child Story Arcs you want included rather than relying on the nesting alone.

If you have quite a few items to update, you can add the relationship to several of them at once using multiple selection in Spreadsheet View:

1. Open a Spreadsheet View containing the items you want to update.

2. Select the items by clicking their row numbers on the left-hand side of the Spreadsheet.

   • Windows: Hold Ctrl while clicking row numbers to select individual items, or Shift to select a range.

   • Mac: Hold Command (⌘) while clicking row numbers to select individual items, or Shift to select a range.

3. With the items selected, use the Inspector to add the appropriate Story Arc relationship.

4. That relationship will be added to all of the selected items.

As I was looking at this alongside your migration question, though, I think the approach in the demo file I posted there may simplify this part of your setup.

For the comparison of different people’s lives that you described, relating the Events directly to the relevant Person lets you group and compare those Events without needing a separate Story Arc beneath each Person. So you may find that you don’t actually need those nested Story Arcs for that particular part of your project.

More generally, where you do want to use Story Arcs, we’d recommend using relationships to associate items with them rather than relying on nesting. Relationships give you more flexibility, particularly if an Event needs to be associated with more than one Story Arc.

Using relationships also means you can:

• associate an Event with multiple Story Arcs where needed;

• use those relationships to group and filter your Events in different Views;

• display and work with the connections in Relationship View; and

• use the relationships in other areas of Aeon, including Subway View.

Hello,

I guess there are two different questions here.

1. I want to see a persons story arc children so that I dont see individual sub story arcs on different tracks, and I dont quite understand your suggestion to set up a relationship instead.
2. When you say to setup a relationship, do you mean a custom relationship? I have those setup too but not sure if correctly. e.g. I have events in which I have a custom relationship of perpetrator and victim, like a raid on a village or a terror attack or a war. I setup a custom relationship with these item types, but in event/relationships view, I do not see these as view options. I’d like my events as rows and perpetrator/victim as columns, but there is no option for adding any custom relationships as columns. Also, I’m a bit confused as to how for example setting up observer, responsible, accounted, consulted, etc from the link you sent functions when in event/relationship view, for example with a solid dot vs. not solid or with an icon. I feel I’m struggling to explain properly so just let me know and I’ll try again.

(i probably dont need all those checkboxes ticked … perpetrators can only be group, armed group or person and these should be only viewable on events… however when I remove event from the top section, it gets removed from my event entirely for some reason… I think that the top section should not have an event ticked and the bottom section should only have event ticked… however, if I remove event from the perpetrator/victim part above as an event cannot be a perpetrator, then I’m not able to select event for show for item type on the bottom… but when I add event to the top, so that I can assign it at the bottom, then when I click on perpetrator in the info panel I see all my events which is distracting. i only want to see person, armed group or group)

Thanks for the additional screenshots and explanations. I think I have a much clearer picture now of what you’re trying to achieve across the Timeline, Subway, and Relationship Views.

Rather than keep suggesting individual changes based on how I’m interpreting your setup, I think it would be more useful at this point for me to take a look at the structure you’ve already built.

If you’re comfortable doing so, could you send us a copy of your .aeon file at support@aeontimeline.com and mention this forum conversation?

You’ve already put quite a bit of work into setting up your Item Types, Story Arcs, nesting, and custom relationships such as Perpetrator/Victim. I’d like to test these questions using your existing structure and see how closely we can get Aeon to displaying the information the way you want, rather than asking you to restructure the project based on assumptions from my side.

If you’d prefer not to share the full project, a copy containing a representative selection of items while retaining the same Item Types, relationships, and nesting would also work.

Once I can see how everything fits together, I should be able to give you much more specific advice on the different questions you’ve raised.
