How to prevent Items from being automatically assigned to new events?

Hi. Since I use a single shared timeline for the entire universe in one project, which currently spans six books, I created a new Item Type to indicate which book or books each event belongs to. This is a very important feature for me, as it allows me to filter events by book title.

The problem is that whenever I create a new event, the Book item is automatically assigned to it, and all books are added at once (unless I have a filter active, in which case only the currently filtered books are added).

This is quite inconvenient, because I then have to remove several entries manually in the Inspector, which is rather cumbersome in Aeon.

Is there any way to prevent this Item Type from being assigned automatically when creating a new event?

Could you include snapshots of how you set up the item type to label books, that might provide a clue.

Just like that.

Here is what I did. I used Acts instead of books, but first duplicated my timeline and saved as a trial (in case messed it up)

Here are the settings for the Item type act

Here is the relationships for acts. I only set them up with events. Those would be unique for each act/book. Characters, places could appear across several books and create overlap.

Now I selected multiple scenes at a time (decreased timeline zoom to see more) and assigned events/scenes to an Act till finished adding.

on sidebar looks like this and changed color of icon

Now if go to Timeline can sort by act see below

I think you have too many things associated which overlap between books which may be causing the problem. I have the final setup below. I hope this helps. (last image a png and will expand if click on it.)

Hi DuchGB,

When you create a new Event in a filtered View, Aeon Timeline will automatically configure the new Event so that it matches the active filter. This is why the Book items included in your filter are being assigned to the new Event.

There are a couple of ways you can avoid this:

  1. Create a separate View for adding new Events. You could open a new View, clear its filters, and create your new Events there. As there is no active Book filter to match, the Book items won’t be automatically assigned.

  2. Create new Events from the Events section of the sidebar. Events created there won’t need to match the filter of your current View, so you can then assign only the relevant Book item or items yourself.

You can continue using your existing filtered Views to work with and display the Events belonging to individual books, while using either of these methods when you want to create an Event without those Book relationships being added automatically.

Hi, sorry for the delay. I got caught up in a whirlwind of other things.

@Goaliedad, thank you so much for your effort. I really appreciate it, but the problem turned out to be somewhere else.

@Riaan, I understand now. When creating a new event, instead of having no books selected in the filter, I had all of them selected. Just a simple perception mistake. I was selecting all of them because I wanted to work with all of them, whereas in reality, to work with all of them, I shouldn’t select any, since it’s a filtering option after all.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the detailed explanation, did not realize the effect of filters on new events when active.

Glad that was useful, @Goaliedad - and thanks again for jumping in with your example earlier. :slightly_smiling_face:
