In terms of a person’s timeline, I’m wondering: How do people normally model a situation like a child (Person) who “lives” at home with their parents but goes to college for most of the year? Or is it just situation dependent upon how much granularity you need? Thanks!

It all depends on what you want to see on the timeline. When it comes to life stages, you can give the places corresponding relationships such as ‘home’ and ‘college’.
If you want to track the person’s location, a single corresponding relationship between event and location is sufficient.
My example screenshots are made with AT version 2; I think it works the same with AT 3.
